Lady Gaga and Glenn Close prove they are Oscar frontrunners after tying for the Critics’ Choice Awards best actress win. Glenn Close is nominated for the movie The Wife while Lady Gaga is sweeping through the award season with her breakout role as Ally in A Star Is Born. Fortunately, there was no love lost between Close and Gaga as Lady Gaga explained that Close and her mother, Cynthia Germanotta, are close friends.

This wasn’t the first tie of the evening as both Amy Adams and Patricia Arquette previously tied for best-supporting actress in a limited television series or made for television movie.

Lady Gaga and Glenn Close competed against Yalitza Aparacio (Roma), Emily Blunt (Mary Poppins Returns), Olivia Colman (The Favourite), and Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?).

The camera panned the audience when presenter Willem Dafoe announced with his arms outstretched, “Crazy Crazy. We got a tie!”

Dafoe announced that one of the Critics’ Choice best actress winners was Glenn Close. She threw her head back in surprise and her eyes were wide with amazement.

You may watch as Willem Dafoe reads the nominees and announced there was a tie in the video player below. It wasn’t until Glenn Close finished her acceptance speech that she found out who the other winner was.

There are high expectations for Glenn Close to land her seventh Oscar nomination for her role as Joan Castleman in The Wife. The Academy Award nominations announcements will take place on January 22, 2019.

As both Glenn Close and Lady Gaga have received multiple best actress nominations for their performances, it’s expected the two will compete once again.

Lady Gaga is a newcomer to the acting scene and has made quite an impression. She’s acted in her videos and received five nominations for her role as the Countess in American Horror Story: Hotel. She won a Golden Globe for best actress in a limited television series or made for television movie for that role.

To date, Lady Gaga has been nominated for three Golden Globes and won two.

Glenn Close has been nominated for 14 Golden Globes. Tonight’s win marks her third. Though it seems that there would be competition between the actresses, Glenn Close clearly emphasized in her acceptance speech that the awards are a time of celebration and appreciating each other.
